چکیده

it seems that today whole world seems to be wrapped in plastics. almost every product we buy, most of the food we eat and many of the liquids we drink, come encased in plastics. the environmental impact of persistent plastic wastes is evoking more global concern as alternative disposal methods are limited. incineration may generate toxic air pollution, and satisfactory landfill sites are limited. also, the petroleum resources are finite and are becoming limited. global working on biopolymers was initiated from 1970 in the petroleum crisis time. those days, developed countries were interested in using special materials for packing purposes which were free from petroleum and its derivatives, so biopolymers has been tested. starch is an inexpensive hydrocarbon and can be found abundantly in plants. it possess weak polymer properties and can be attained the properties of petroleum polymers by modification. the shape of starch-based utensil is the same as plastic utensil except for being biodegradable. in recent years, there has been a marked increase in interest in biodegradable materials for use in packaging, agriculture, medicine, and other areas.

Alkaline treatments to render starch-based biodegradable polymers self-mineralizable.

The present research aims to develop a new route for surface functionalization of biodegradable polymers. The method is based on a wet chemistry modification, resulting in etching and/or hydrolysis in order to increase the amount of polar groups, such as hydroxyl (--OH) and carboxylic (--COOH) groups on the surface of the polymer. The polymer used as substrate was a corn starch-ethylene vinyl a...

Durability of Starch Based Biodegradable Plastics Reinforced with Manila Hemp Fibers

The biodegradability of Manila hemp fiber reinforced biodegradable plastics was studied for 240 days in a natural soil and 30 days in a compost soil. After biodegradability tests, weights were measured and both tensile strength tests and microscopic observation were performed to evaluate the biodegradation behavior of the composites. The results indicate that the tensile strength of the composi...

Preparation and Characteristics of Paper-based Biodegradable Plastics

The aim of this work was to make biodegradable plastics from renewable resources. Paper-based biodegradable plastics were produced via a sol-gel process by using zinc chloride solution. The optimum conditions were a zinc chloride concentration of 65%, reaction temperature of 70 °C, reaction time of 5 s, aging time of 3 h, and glycerol concentration of 10%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscop...

Biodegradable and compostable alternatives to conventional plastics.

Packaging waste forms a significant part of municipal solid waste and has caused increasing environmental concerns, resulting in a strengthening of various regulations aimed at reducing the amounts generated. Among other materials, a wide range of oil-based polymers is currently used in packaging applications. These are virtually all non-biodegradable, and some are difficult to recycle or reuse...

Starch-based completely biodegradable polymer materials

Starch is a natural polymer which possesses many unique properties and some shortcoming simultaneously. Some synthetic polymers are biodegradable and can be tailor-made easily. Therefore, by combining the individual advantages of starch and synthetic polymers, starch-based completely biodegradable polymers (SCBP) are potential for applications in biomedical and environmental fields. Therefore i...
